There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the border from next door Thailand, where gambling den betting is against the law. Eight gambling halls are established in a relatively tiny area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent area, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest betting locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing capital accrued from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a couple of limitations constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; although, financial sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and although visas are apparently needed to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is accurate of most border crossings.
The original Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau gambling hall, contains 150 slot machines and 60 table games. The Naga river boat is open all day and night with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of 150 slot machine games and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 one armed bandits and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat banque (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and sixty six of the familiar table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international resort and hotel complex that features many luxuries on top of the casino, which houses ten thousand square feet of 130 one armed bandits and 88 table games.
