There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where casino wagering is against the law. Eight gambling halls are established in a relatively small space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent area, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular betting locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a couple of restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; however, financing sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 17:00, and despite the fact visas are supposedly needed to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is true of most border crossings.
The initial Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only 1 gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored barge casino, features one hundred and fifty slots and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slots and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and 66 of the normal gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel complex that contains numerous conveniences aside from the gambling hall, which houses ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machines and 88 tables.
